Dedicated Server Hosting South Africa: 5 Providers Compared

Dedicated Server Hosting South Africa: 5 Providers Compared

The best dedicated server hosting South Africa providers pair a Johannesburg data centre with clear rand pricing, a stated management level and fast setup. HostAfrica suits teams that want published bare-metal tiers. VpsCity suits buyers who want a managed option. Afrihost suits anyone who dislikes contracts. Rackzar suits custom builds, including GPU servers. QuikeFix suits buyers who want a low entry price with managed IT behind it.

Choosing is harder than it looks. Every provider says "enterprise grade", but their pages differ on who patches the operating system, whether root access survives a managed plan, how fast the port is and whether VAT is in the price. A cheap box that you must secure yourself can cost more than a pricier managed one once you count your own time.

Below you get five providers compared on the same three points: hardware and plans, support and management, and price with best fit. QuikeFix is our own service, so it comes first, and you should read it with that in mind. The other four are judged on what their public pages state. Treat every price as a starting point to confirm before you order.

1. QuikeFix

QuikeFix sells dedicated servers through its hosting portal, alongside managed IT, security and hosting services. It is the right pick when you want hardware and ongoing technical help from one vendor.

Hardware and plans

QuikeFix lists seven dedicated server plans, from a 2-core Intel Atom to a 64-core AMD EPYC 7742. Prices below are indicative rand conversions of the portal’s US dollar prices.

PlanSpecificationIndicative price
Intel Atom2 cores at 1.6GHz, 2GB RAM, 250GB HDD, 10TB bandwidthR825.83

AMD EPYC 7302P16 cores at 3.0GHz, 128GB RAM, 2 x 2TB NVMe, unmeteredR3,303.83
AMD EPYC 774264 cores at 2.25GHz, 256GB RAM, 2 x 4TB NVMe, unmeteredR4,129.83

Support and management

Confirm the data-centre location first. The portal prices in US dollars, and the E3-1231v3 plan is listed with USA, Asia or Europe availability subject to confirmation. Do not assume a Johannesburg location. If low latency or local data residency matters to you, ask before you pay.

QuikeFix also offers server administration, backup planning, security and help desk services, so you can add management later. Before ordering, confirm these points:

  • Operating system and software licences
  • Management level and backups
  • IP addresses
  • Provisioning time
  • Migration requirements

Pricing and best fit

The rand figures use USD 1 = ZAR 16.52, so the live portal price controls the final amount. Tax, setup fees and licences can change it. As an example, the Xeon E3-1230 at R1,156.23 comes to about R13,875 a year before extras.

This fits businesses that want hosting plus managed IT or ERP from one provider. It fits less well if you need a confirmed South African location today.

Check the data-centre location before you compare QuikeFix’s low entry price with anyone else’s.

2. HostAfrica

HostAfrica publishes a clear ladder of self-managed bare-metal servers hosted in Johannesburg. It is a strong choice for a dedicated server for web hosting, e-commerce or registrar work.

Hardware and plans

The Metal Core Linux range uses Dell R640 and R650 servers with Intel Xeon processors, 1TB of SSD and dual power supplies.

PlanCores / RAMPrice per month
Metal Core Linux 88 cores, 16GB ECCR2,340
Metal Core Linux 1212 cores, 32GB ECCR2,790
Metal Core Linux 1616 cores, 64GB ECCR3,590
Metal Core Linux 2020 cores, 96GB ECCR4,390
Metal Core Linux 2828 cores, 128GB ECCR6,290

Support and management

You get full root access plus IPMI, a 99.9% uptime guarantee, DDoS mitigation, triple upstream providers and a 1Gbps network. Setup takes 24 hours with no setup fee. Standby generators and UPS units cover load-shedding.

The optional managed control panel add-on covers OS and security updates, advanced backups, monitoring and priority support. Root access is restricted on managed servers, so decide which you value more.

Pricing and best fit

Billing runs monthly, quarterly, six-monthly or annually. Windows Server carries extra licence fees. A cheaper route is the Linux virtual dedicated server at R1,080 a month, but that is virtual, not bare metal.

For a worked example, take Metal Core Linux 8 at R2,340 plus a cPanel licence for 100 accounts at R1,399. That is R3,739 a month, or R44,868 a year. It suits hosting agencies and online stores that need cPanel.

HostAfrica gives you the clearest published tiers, but you manage the server yourself unless you add the managed panel.

3. VpsCity

VpsCity is the pick when you are unsure how much server administration you can handle. It sells Johannesburg-hosted servers with four management levels.

A four-step ladder showing VpsCity's management levels, rising from self-managed to enterprise managed.

Hardware and plans

Servers run on HP, Dell, IBM or SuperMicro enterprise hardware, with SSD storage and Intel Xeon processors. You can choose hardware or software RAID and Linux or Windows. A 100Mbps port is standard, 1Gbps is available, and the plan includes a /30 block of IP addresses.

Support and management

The management ladder is the main reason to consider VpsCity.

TierMonitoringIndicative monthly support
Self-managedNone listedNone
Partially managedBasic2 hours
Fully managedStandard3 hours
Enterprise managedAdvanced4 hours

Every server includes a client portal with metrics, bandwidth tracking, firewall and backup tools. Support runs 24/7, and the page cites a 99.9% network uptime guarantee and one-hour hardware replacement. Game servers are not allowed.

Pricing and best fit

Setup costs R99.95, and prices are in rand including VAT. Servers are usually ready within 24 hours of the first payment. Plan prices load in the order portal, so confirm the monthly figure for your configuration there.

It suits companies that want to start self-managed and move to fully managed as the workload grows.

VpsCity lets you buy only the amount of management you need, then upgrade it later.

4. Afrihost

Afrihost is a long-running South African ISP that sells dedicated hosting with no lock-in. It works well when you want a low cost dedicated server hosting entry point.

A rack server on a shelf with three monthly calendar pages fanned out in front of it.

Hardware and plans

Afrihost builds and deploys a rack server with current components and manages the hardware. You handle the rest. The page does not list specifications, so open the packages section to compare processors, RAM and disks before you decide.

Support and management

Network engineers monitor and maintain the hardware to keep component failures low. Operating system updates are only done on managed dedicated servers. On unmanaged servers you patch everything yourself.

Backups are your responsibility. An optional free backup FTP server exists, but Afrihost does not guarantee backup completeness. Visiting the data centre needs written notice of at least 24 hours. Help is available by WhatsApp.

Pricing and best fit

Plans start from R1,350 a month, the lowest published start among the providers here that run South African hardware. All packages are month to month, with no fixed-term contract.

It fits small businesses and developers who want to test a dedicated box without a commitment. It fits less well if you need a published uptime guarantee, which the page does not state.

Afrihost’s strength is flexibility, so budget for your own backups and patching.

5. Rackzar

Rackzar targets buyers who want to tailor the machine. Its listing covers AMD Ryzen and Intel Xeon servers, with 24/7 local support.

Hardware and plans

The standout feature is customisation of CPU, GPU, RAM and storage. A GPU option is rare among these providers, so Rackzar suits rendering, AI experiments and other compute-heavy work. A standard website rarely needs one.

Support and management

Rackzar advertises 24/7 local support. Its public listing does not say what management levels exist. Ask these questions before ordering:

  • Is remote management such as IPMI included?
  • Is the RAM ECC?
  • Who patches the operating system?
  • How long does provisioning take?

Pricing and best fit

Pricing starts from R1,499 a month. Custom builds with GPUs or large storage will cost more, so request a quote for your exact configuration. This is the choice for performance-focused buyers who know their workload.

Pick Rackzar when the hardware spec matters more than a standard tier.

Picking the right server for your budget

Start with how much server work you want to do yourself. Self-managed plans from HostAfrica and Afrihost cost less, while VpsCity’s tiers and managed add-ons shift the patching to someone else. Then confirm where the server physically sits, because that decides latency and data residency. Finally, add up the real monthly total, including licences, setup and VAT, before comparing cheap plans.

QuikeFix fits when you want dedicated hardware and managed IT, security and software from one provider, and you will confirm location and scope during consultation. If you want a configuration review or a quote, talk to QuikeFix about a dedicated server.
